Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 lands to battle Galaxy Z Fold 4, but you can’t buy it

It’s been 24 hours or so for foldable phones, with Samsung and Motorola putting their best foot forward. Now it’s Xiaomi’s turn with the Mix Fold 2.

During an event in China, the Android maker revealed a direct competitor to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which is actually thinner and lighter than Samsung’s latest and greatest.

In fact, it’s just 5.4mm thick when folded in tablet mode, compared to 6.3mm when folded 4. It’s 11.2mm thick when folded, compared to the 15.88mm thick of its competition. That’s despite squeezing a 4,500mAh battery that can be fully replenished at 67W in just 40 minutes when wired.

The device — which opens and closes like a book, rather than the flip-up Moto Razr (2022) and Galaxy Z Flip 4 — offers an 8.2-inch OLED panel in tablet mode, with a 2016 x 1914 resolution. In phone mode, the 6.56-inch screen swings with 2520 x 1,080. Both displays promise 120Hz refresh rates.

Reassuringly, everything is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 on a chip, while there’s a Leica-powered 50MP rear camera in the mix. It’s joined by an 8MP portrait camera and a 20MP selfie camera, but like Samsung phones, the design allows those great rear cameras to be used for your selfies, too.

Unfortunately, as tempting as this sounds, Samsung has nothing to worry about outside of China, which the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is unlikely to get away with. It’s quite a shame, as we’d love to see Samsung get its money and increase its viable competition. Folding in the UK and abroad. Perhaps Apple would like to step in?
