Will Samsung ditch Exynos and use only Snapdragon chips in the Galaxy S25?


Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S25 series is the subject of much speculation, especially regarding the chipset that will be used in these phone models. While Samsung was previously expected to use both Exynos and Snapdragon chipsets, a new report suggests that the company will use Snapdragon chips exclusively.

According to a report by a Korean news website HankyungAll three models, the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra, will use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor for Galaxy devices globally. This contradicts initial expectations when Samsung planned to use the Exynos 2500 chip, announced a few weeks ago, in the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25+.

This new strategy is different from this year, when the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ used the Exynos 2400 in most countries, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra used the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.

The new design is said to be the Galaxy S25 Ultra design.

Since the iPhone 16 will be Apple’s first smartphone to focus on AI performance and features, Samsung needs to compete properly and the Galaxy S25 needs to have the best AI performance in the industry. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is said to be on par with the A18 chip found in the iPhone 16. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is said to offer significant improvements (over 30%) in AI and GPU performance.

Chinese companies like Huawei and Xiaomi are also developing their first AI-focused phones. Therefore, Samsung does not want to take risks and only uses the best chip on the market. The Korean company wants to maintain its leadership position in AI phones by using the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 For Galaxy in the Galaxy S25 series.

Samsung uses Exynos in some of its high-end phones to negotiate better prices. Samsung’s semiconductor (LSI) divisions and Qualcomm compete for the highest orders (often in the tens of millions). So Samsung LSI and Qualcomm will try to provide their chips to Samsung’s smartphone division at the lowest possible price. Using chips from multiple sources also helps increase supply chain reliability.
