Nintendo has released the official trailer for the upcoming Super Mario Bros animated movie, giving us our first look at Chris Pratt as an iconic chubby plumber.
Pratt, of Guardians of the Galaxy fame, is the new voice behind Mario and the trailer released on Thursday is the first time we’ve heard about the beloved character in games.
And what are the results? Well, it’s not all that great. Pratt had prefaced the trailer by revealing that the sound would be “unlike anything I’ve heard” and he was right. Maybe not the way he intended.
You can judge for yourself below, but to us it looks like Pratt’s actual voice is feeding into one of those AI text-to-speech tools from TikTok, which tries to sound like real sentences being spoken. Where does the Italian accent exaggerate “it’s-a-meeee”?
Prior to the trailer’s release, people were upset about the lack of a Mario trademark rear end in the poster, and the internet is now similarly upset. However, having Jack Black as Bowser is the joy you would expect. You can watch the trailer below:
Have you wondered if this was necessary, after the disastrous 1993 outing that featured Bob Hoskins as the red-suited brother? Well, going back to 2020, a survey of 2,200 Americans showed that nearly half of them were willing to give a Mario career redemption in a live adaptation. The survey asked users which games they were “very” or “somewhat” interested in. 44% of those surveyed were “very interested” in Mario Bros, who topped the survey. They got their wish next April, albeit in an animated movie.
