The images reveal the MagSafe “Magic Charger” for iPhone

MagSafe came to iPhone in 2020 with the introduction of the iPhone 12. So far, Apple itself hasn’t expanded the range of accessories that take advantage of MagSafe technology, outside of the polarizing MagSafe Battery Pack.

New photos posted to Twitter purport to show a MagSafe accessory that Apple apparently developed but abandoned before launch: the “Magic Charger”.

Images of this unreleased MagSafe accessory appeared on Twitter today from UserTheBlueMister, which is one of several accounts that often share images of prototypes of Apple devices and accessories. Twitter account Duan Rui also shared photos of the accessory.

The name of the Magic Charger accessory is what appears when you connect that accessory to your Mac. The Magic Charger’s design is primarily an aluminum base with an integrated MagSafe dial. The MagSafe disc can be set flat or pushed up at an angle, sort of like a stand (but not really, more on that below).

There’s no word on any other features of the unreleased Magic Charger, and we don’t know why Apple never released it. However, the obvious reason is that it does not seem like a very useful or practical accessory….

This magical charger seems practically worthless. It appears that you will only be able to place your iPhone on the MagIc charger in landscape mode or lay it flat when the MagSafe disk is installed in the dock. portrait mode? no.

I’d really like to see Apple invest more in the MagSafe ecosystem for the iPhone. The company does offer a few accessories that use MagSafe, but they’ve all been met with mixed responses from users.

The MagSafe Duo had promise when it was announced, but its $129 price point (shipping brick not included) made it hard to recommend. Nowadays, it’s a more difficult sell because it lacks the fast charging support of the latest Apple Watch models and has some fit and finish issues with recent iPhones.

The MagSafe battery pack was also polarized. While it can be useful for topping up your iPhone, its small battery size and bulky design make it impractical for everyday use. The MagSafe Wallet is my favorite personal MagSafe accessory made by Apple, and it really got better with the latest update that added Find My support.

Outdoor accessory makers have been much better at finding ways to take advantage of MagSafe technology in useful and smart ways. Ideally, Apple would do the same at some point, but what we’ve seen so far isn’t promising — and this “magic charger” shows that there are thankfully worse ideas that haven’t seen the light of day.
