Sleep Apnea feature appears ahead of Galaxy Watch 7 launch

Just a day before Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy Watch 7 and 7 Ultra with new features, a new feature to detect sleep apnea has apparently started rolling out to users' devices.

The Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch 7 Ultra are likely to come with new features. We’re not entirely sure what they are yet, but there have been a few hints over the past few months. In February, Samsung announced that a new sleep apnea detection feature had received FDA approval in the US. Since then, it hasn’t been highlighted much as no Galaxy Watch uses it.

Now, it seems that the Galaxy Watch series has started seeing this feature. A user on Reddit posted a few screenshots showing the Sleep Apnea feature that became available after an update to the Samsung Health Monitor app. The user noticed that it is in the One UI Watch 6 beta program, which is available for the Galaxy Watch 4, 5, and 6.

According to the Samsung Health Monitor app, the minimum watch that can use the new feature is the Watch 4. It also noted that the minimum operating system is Wear OS 5 and One UI Watch 6.

The app takes at least two nights to detect any signs of sleep apnea on the Galaxy Watch. From there, the watch tracks the number of “relative drops in blood oxygen” the user experiences per night. This measurement can determine if the user has moderate to severe sleep apnea. The feature turns off after two nights.

At the moment, Samsung hasn’t said much about the feature other than the FDA approval. If the feature is coming to users on the One UI Watch 6, it’s safe to assume it will launch with the Galaxy Watch 7 when it goes public, probably tomorrow. After a while, the full version of One UI Watch 6 will roll out to older watches after the new Watch 7, though that could take a few months.
