Progress can often mean collateral damage along the way, and that seems to be the case with iPhone Lock Screen on iOS 16.
Because the ability to customize the lock screen (from the lock screen, no less) seems to have eliminated the ability to set a Live Photo as wallpaper.
For a few years now, iPhone users have been able to long press on the locked screen to see a small gif-style video of a selfie they set as the lock screen wallpaper; Provided that Live Photos is enabled in the Camera app when capturing.
Now, a long press on Lock Screen only brings up the personalization interface that enables iPhone users to add iOS 16 widgets, change fonts, customize photos with filters, and more.
To be honest, I am very upset about this. I loved peeking from my laptop screen, randomly pressing the lock screen to see my dog gently yawning, or my wife and I enjoying the sunset together. You brought a small smile to this freelancer’s face, and now he’s gone. It was just a simple thing, but that’s part of what I love about Apple products. Those little touches, none of which are too small to handle.
Don’t get me wrong. Love the new lock screen customization options, too. I wrote about it when Apple unveiled the feature at WWDC this year. Apple was finally giving users the ability to create their own look when the company’s longstanding old guard insisted that what they thought was best was best.
However, how often will people really customize the lock screen? Playing 2-3 times with different images and widgets before settling on a set of normal time and Do Not Disturb? Surely the personalization interface can go into the background settings and I can restore my Live Photo?
Apple should be confident enough in this feature to know that people will be looking for it, rather than at the expense of a common visual feature. And how many times will people shoot this by accident.
I made some in-OS modifications and couldn’t find a way to get Live Photos back to lock screen. So if you can, tell me! After doing some searching on the internet, I found out that this was also in the iOS 16 beta so this isn’t exactly news, but it will be for those who have enthusiastically downloaded iOS 16 when it launches to consumers on Monday 12th September.
We’ve contacted Apple to see if there’s a way to get back to Live Photos (and Live Photos wallpapers for that matter) on the lock screen.
Live Photos have been around since the iPhone 6S in 2018, and when they do, it’s like a serendipitous charm that captures a second or so of video before the still photo is captured. I still think it’s one of the best camera features Apple has created. Although I like the direct conversion to GIF mode instead of the embarrassing “Save as Video” option that can and then Can be converted to gif for sharing. I can forgive it if they give me back my Live Photos on the lock screen again!
