Qualcomm This week introduced it new Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 platform. Created specifically for augmented reality applications such as augmented reality glasses and the like. Designed from the ground up to revolutionize the wearable market. The main processor takes up 40% less space than a glass printed circuit board, and the overall platform provides 2.5 times better performance than AI with 50% less power consumption to help achieve augmented reality glasses that consume less than 1 watt of power. “This enables rich AR experiences on glasses that can be worn comfortably for extended periods of time and meet the demands of both consumer and enterprise use cases,” says Qualcomm.
To better balance weight and reduce arm width on either side of the glasses, Snapdragon AR2 uses a multi-chip architecture that includes an AR processor, an AR co-processor, and a communication platform. Snapdragon AR2 dynamically distributes processing of response-time-sensitive perceptual data directly to the glasses and offloads more complex data processing requirements to a phone A Snapdragon smartphone, PC, or other compatible host devices.
Qualcomm Snapdragon AR2
“We built Snapdragon AR2 to address the unique challenges of augmented reality, providing industry-leading processing, artificial intelligence, and connectivity that can fit into a sleek form factor,” said Hugo Swart, vice president of XR Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.. With the technical and physical demands of VR/MR and AR spacing, the Snapdragon AR2 represents another metaverse platform in our XR portfolio to help our OEM partners revolutionize AR glasses. “
“Microsoft worked closely with Qualcomm on the platform requirements for Snapdragon AR2 to help identify core purpose-built technologies to unlock new possibilities in AR experiences,” said Ruben Caballero, Microsoft Reality Vice President, Devices & Technology, Microsoft. “The innovations of the Snapdragon AR2 platform will revolutionize AR devices that transform immersive productivity and collaboration, and we look forward to seeing the innovation that Qualcomm and its partners bring to market.”
