Pixel 7 Pro Clear Calling runs with Android 13 QPR1 Beta 3

Today’s surprise release of Android 13 QPR1 Beta 3 has only minor tweaks to the user interface, but it enables Clear Calling on the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro.

Clear Calling was announced at a Made by Google event that lets you hear people when they’re in noisy places. It can filter out background noise and improve sounds.

After updating to Android 13 QPR1 Beta 3, open the Settings app and go to Sound and vibration. At the bottom (just before switching), you’ll find a new “Clear Connection” menu. There is a simple switch with Google stating that availability depends on “Wi-Fi and mobile network connection”. In addition, “the content from your call is not sent to Google.”

In brief use, we’ve found that this feature works as advertised and that you can turn Clear Calling on/off in the middle of a call. In our use, background highway noise wasn’t completely removed, but reduced to a hiss that’s too quiet to be ignored. It was much easier to hear the speaker.

The Google Store states that Clear Calling is “not available on VOIP calls”:

The quality of the connection depends on the environment, carrier network conditions, and many other factors. Actual results may vary.

There should be a support article once Clear Calling is officially launched, but it hasn’t been posted yet.

As we found out earlier this week, the free Google One VPN for Pixel 7 and 7 Pro phones will launch in December. Clear Calling should be enabled with the final release of QPR1 for the Pixel 7 series due out next.

Meanwhile, Android 13 QPR1 Beta 3 brings several visual tweaks to the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. This includes a new look for the Android 13 media player and the ability to remove it from the lock screen. You also get animated quick settings icons, with a very stable experience for those who want to join now.
