No more hidden identification, TRAI to ensure the caller’s name is visible

One of the biggest frustrations for users across the country or the world is getting spam calls. This usually happens when we are unable to identify the caller if it is an unsaved number. Although there are apps like Truecaller, not everyone wants to sign up due to privacy concerns. However, you will not need to subscribe to any third-party caller ID app after TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) revives its new scale. According to the FE report, TRAI will soon introduce a metric that ensures that whenever a user receives a call, the caller’s name flashes on the screen. TRAI will make use of the KYC (Know Your Customer) database to obtain information. Whether the feature requires another app or will be integrated into the default caller app is something we’ll have to wait and see.

You don’t have to worry about the caller

Even if the number from which you receive the call is not saved on your device, you will be able to see its name. Although Truecaller isn’t really a bad option, there is one limitation to the app. Truecaller data is crowdsourced. It does not come through a KYC database. But TRAI will be able to make use of the KYC database making the system more efficient and accurate.

With KYC data, authorities will also be able to see if telecom service providers followed the full protocol for storing user data or if they chose shortcuts. Not only normal calls will be integrated with TRAI’s caller identification mechanism, but also WhatsApp calls.

The report states that WhatsApp calls will also flash the names of the people registered with the number they are calling from. WhatsApp accounts are also linked to users’ phone numbers. But this will be a separate exercise and will be worked on after the feature is implemented for regular calls through default voice calling apps.

There are some who do not like the development because they believe that this may amount to an invasion of privacy. However, TRAI will conduct a consultation process for itself before moving forward with this step. The final decision should come from the Department of Communications (DoT) to implement the mechanism. TRAI will make its recommendations to DoT after a consultation process.
