Netflix Basic with Ads launches on 3 November for £4.99 per month



Netflix has confirmed that the new Basic with Ads category will launch on 3 November, costing £4.99 in the UK.

The lowest priced, ad-supported plan is just £2 cheaper than the basic ad-free plan, which will still be available to all subscribers in the future.

For this £2 savings, Basic with Ads subscribers will have to deal with four to five minutes of ads per hour. These ads will be 15-30 seconds long at launch and will be shown to viewers before and during TV shows and movies. There is no information yet on how often it appears.

As stated in preparation for launch, Basic With Ads subscribers will initially see an incomplete library. The streaming giant says that due to licensing restrictions, some movies won’t be available, but it’s working to get rid of that.

The maximum resolution will still be 720p as with the basic ad-free plan, but there will be no chance of downloading shows for offline viewing. This was also reported during the lead up to this show.

In a blog post, Netflix reassures viewers: “Our existing plans and our members will not be affected. Basic with Ads complements our ad-free Basic, Standard, and Premium plans.”

So, if you don’t want to change anything, it won’t. If you can stand the ads, you can save a few off per month, with subscriptions starting November 3. Basic with Ads will be available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Earlier this week, Netflix revealed that it has signed up to independent UK rating agency BARB TV. This will enable advertisers to gain more knowledge about how many people are watching Netflix shows, but it will also help the audience understand just how widespread Netflix’s biggest hits are amid all the social media hype and hard-to-understand Netflix’ hours and charts that only include other Netflix shows.
