Nest Wifi Pro issue limits download speeds to 50Mbps for some

Nest Wifi Pro has only been available for a few days, but some customers are already seeing an issue limiting their download speeds to 50Mbps.

Modernization: Google has provided a timeline for when this issue will be fixed.

The Nest Wifi Pro comes with the promise of Wi-Fi 6E, which is intended to enable high-speed connectivity, both within your home network and when using the Internet. For some, though, Google’s new mesh routers were a major downgrade.

As thoroughly discussed in the Google Nest community forums, some find that when switching to Nest Wifi Pro, download speeds drop to just 50Mbps, even though the previous router offered significantly faster speeds. Even owners of previous generations of Nest Wifi and Google Wifi find these older devices outperform the new Nest Wifi Pro.

The exact reason why Nest Wifi Pro slows down is still uncertain, but there are some common trends among those reporting slow download speeds. Most commentators pay for fiber internet, specifically fiber-to-the-premises or “FTTP,” where the Nest Wifi Pro connects directly to a fiber ONT (Optical Network Terminal). Most of the cases also seem to refer to PPPoE, which is a protocol that handles things like authenticating with your internet provider over Ethernet.

Another notable factor is that many of the download speed issue reports come from UK Nest Wifi Pro owners. According to a comment, Google is said to be actively looking into an issue with Nest Wifi Pro specific to customers in the UK.

Those affected have taken some ways to solve their problem and are getting faster download speeds from Nest Wifi Pro – these methods range from practical to smart. Some have had luck just putting another router – be it an old Google Wifi or any other device within reach – before the Nest Wifi Pro, but this solution didn’t work for everyone. Others either completely return the Nest Wifi Pro or give Google a few days to work things out before bringing it back.

Update 11/12: In a statement to the edgeGoogle has confirmed that “a small number of users” are experiencing issues with download speeds on the Nest Wifi Pro, particularly customers in the UK who connect to the internet using PPPoE. According to Nest Wifi Pro Head of Product Sanjay Noronha, a solution to this issue will be rolled out early next week.

With any luck, this should be easily solvable with a Google firmware update, especially since other Nest Wifi routers handle the same networks without issue. Until this update, it’s a shame to see early adopters of the Nest Wifi Pro unable to use the router to its full potential.
