Motorola unveils foldable display concept, which Apple misunderstands for Pencil users

It’s Sunday, which means it’s time for us to pick the winner and loser from last week.

This week has been relatively quiet in terms of tech news. Apple has unveiled the latest updates to its iPad and iPad Pro lines, while nothing has been announced about a 50% price increase on the earbuds (1) and Netflix revealed that it was exploring the possibility of launching a cloud gaming service.

However, this week’s winner is Motorola, while our loser is Apple. Read on to find out why each company gets their sites.

Motorola Rollable Concept

Winner: Motorola

This week’s winner is Motorola after the brand revealed an interesting new concept phone at Lenovo’s annual Tech World show.

The smartphone — which Motorola aptly dubbed “Rollable” — has a built-in display that expands to form a larger screen, giving you more room for playing games, watching movies, or anything else that might benefit from a larger screen.

While the concept of a rollable screen isn’t new, most rollable phones we’ve seen have focused on expanding into larger tablet-sized devices—think of the soon-to-be-gone LG Rollable, for example.

The Motorola Rollable differs by starting at just over 4 inches high and expanding into a 6.5-inch phone, making it more practical than many of the rollable concepts that came before it.

By designing a foldable phone, Motorola is addressing the problem that foldable devices like Motorola’s Galaxy Z and Razr series have been scrambling to fix for two years. Both technologies allow you to carry a large screen without taking it out of your pockets or taking up space in a bag, which is becoming more important as smartphones seem to get bigger every year.

Of course, Rollable is just a concept at the moment, but it’s exciting to see companies experimenting with different technologies for screens.

iPad 10 . range

Loser: Apple

The loser this week is Apple after the company announced the latest addition to its iPad line, the iPad 10.

The iPad features a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display, a 12MP rear camera with 4K video support, a 12MP ultra-widescreen front camera, Wi-Fi 6 and 5G connectivity and an A14 Bionic chip.

The tablet is also compatible with a few accessories, including the Magic Keyboard Folio Keyboard and Apple Pencil – but only the first generation.

It is clear that there is nothing wrong at first glance. The latest iPad only supported the first generation Apple Pencil as well, and the iPad 10 is cheaper than other Apple models, so it makes sense that the company won’t include every feature of the iPad Pro.

Where the lack of a second-generation Apple Pencil becomes an issue is the tablet’s USB-C port insertion.

Apple has ditched the Lightning port on the iPad, and while there are plenty of positives to this (like USB-C becoming the popular connectivity standard these days), there’s a glaring problem. Unlike the Apple Pencil (2nd generation), which magnetically attaches to the side of the tablet, the Apple Pencil (1st generation) requires a Lightning port to charge.

This makes it likely that you’ll need to pay extra for the Apple Pencil to USB-C Adapter to pair and charge the first-generation stylus. The adapter comes in the box with the latest version of the Apple Pencil (1st generation), but you’ll have to buy it separately if you don’t already have one.

While we were happy to see Apple keeping the iPad at such an affordable price, the adapter is a tricky solution to a problem that could have been fixed by introducing Apple Pencil (2nd generation) support.
