Manage passwords and sync across multiple platforms


Storing your login information in the browser is currently quite safe, but if you want to protect your username/password more carefully, Bitwarden is a good option. This utility supports management and protection with two layers of authentication, data encryption according to the comprehensive AES-256 bit, salted hashing and PBKDF2 SHA-256 standards, used and synchronized on multiple platforms (browser, iOS, Android, Windows, Amazon).

How to install Bitwarden

– On your computer: Open your browser, go to https://bitwarden.com/ > Scroll down to the middle of the page > Click on the browser you use to install it as an extension.

2. Usage:

By using a hash algorithm for the account password before saving it in the database, it makes it difficult for hackers to guess the original password string, so it is impossible to view the password when the database is taken over.

3. Enable two-step login:

The utility supports 2-step login if you feel unsafe using your master password.

Open your browser, go to https://vault.bitwarden.com/#/settings/two-step > Sign in. To use this feature, you need to activate your account in your registration email. Click Send an email to verify your account… To send a verification message > Click on the link in the message.

For regular (free) users, you are supported with 2-step login authentication via the Authy/Google Authenticator app and email. More advanced (charged) requires authentication via SMS, call or…

Note: To avoid being unable to log in with 2-step authentication if your app/email is lost or stolen, you should use a recovery code as a precaution. Click Show redemption code To receive the code.

4. Extract account information:

The utility can help you extract account information abroad when needed.

How to Convert Google Authenticator to Bitwarden Authenticator

June 2024 Bitwarden Authenticator now supports importing TOTP (Time-Based One-Time Passwords) tokens from other authenticator apps. This news was shared by a Bitwarden employee on the company’s Reddit community.

New feature

  • TOTP code import/export support: Bitwarden Authenticator allows you to export and import TOTP codes from other apps. You can enter 2FA codes from Bitwarden Password Manager, Google Authenticator, LastPass, 2FAS, Aegis (for Android), and Raivo (for iOS).

  1. Export files:
    • Aegis, Raivo, and LastPass users need to export a JSON file from the app settings.
    • 2FAS users need to export a .2FAS file from the application.
    • Google Authenticator users can use the Account Transfer section of the app to generate QR codes and transfer them to Bitwarden.
  2. Import files into Bitwarden Authenticator:
    • Open Bitwarden Authenticator and tap the Settings tab at the bottom of the screen.

Instructions for exporting TOTP token from Bitwarden Authenticator

  • Bitwarden Authenticator also allows you to export your tokens to a .JSON file from Settings > Export. You can use this file to back up your credentials, especially when the app is not syncing data to the cloud.
  • To protect your code, you must enable the “Unlock with Biometrics/Face ID” option in the app settings.

NB

  • Some users on Reddit reported that Bitwarden was unable to import tokens from 2FAS, but this issue did not occur to me. There may be a new update that fixed this bug.
  • Currently, there is no official way to import TOTP codes from Microsoft Authenticator or Authy because these apps do not allow easy export of codes. However, there is an unofficial way to export codes from Authy, you can refer to the instructions on GitHub.
