How United Airlines is using iPhone + iPad for safety, delays, and more

Apple has published a new “success story” on its Apple at Work website, promoting the partnership with United Airlines. Apple says United Airlines has deployed iPhones and iPads for all of its 85,000 employees, making them “fully mobile and empowering to be more efficient.” There are some great stats on how this partnership is helping employees, passengers, and more…

Apple says:

United Airlines connects millions of people to the places and moments that matter most. The company understands that its employees are key to making these connections. With the iPhone and iPad, all 85,000 United employees are fully mobile and empowered to be more efficient — making tasks simpler to complete, easier to connect, and making travel more enjoyable for customers.

United employees are co-thinking in developing custom iPad and iPhone apps, demonstrating United’s belief that consolidation is the driver of innovation. This has enabled employees to devise new solutions to improve travel and put customer service first.

According to statistics published by Apple, this new deployment of 120,000 Apple devices to United Airlines employees has saved 13 million passenger minutes of delay. It represents a 10-year relationship between the two companies for “continuous innovation with Apple products and services.”

Apple has some details about how United Airlines employees use their new iPhones and iPads:

  • With improved efficiencies, United has been able to reduce the number of departure agents required per flight from two to one, without compromising customer service.
  • Digital approval of maintenance issuance documents on the iPad helped prevent delays on 4,386 flights and saved 684,000 passengers annually from delays.
  • The dedicated United Tech app eliminates the technician’s reliance on paper, reducing maintenance time by eight minutes per trip and saving one million pieces of paper per month.
