Google is making it easier to clear your data from search as wearable device sales drop


The biggest tech news this week was undoubtedly the launch Nvidia RTX 4000 Seriesbut the maker of graphics cards did not crown either a winner or a loser.

This week, those titles will go to Google and the wearable market, respectively. Read on to find out about the new gadget from Google that impressed us this week, as well as why the wearables market is seen as a loser.

Winner: Google

The winner this week is Google after the company rolled out a tool that will make it much easier to clear personal information from Google search results.

This feature is called Results About You and allows the user to request that data such as phone numbers, email address and even home addresses be removed from search results, as well as illegal and outdated information.

The tool was announced at Google I/O in May, but we didn’t hear much about it until 9to5Google discovered it on Google’s Android app earlier this week.

The initial announcement came shortly after Google updated its policies to allow users to request that sensitive and personally identifiable information be removed from Google search. The idea behind Results For You is to simplify this removal process by inviting users to report their private information in just a few clicks.

Of course, removing personal information from Google will not erase it from the web completely. Websites will still need to connect directly to do this, and depending on how widespread your information is, this may take some back and forth. There is also no guarantee that your data will not appear elsewhere on the web later.

However, since Google is the first place many people go to when searching for information, your “results for you” can be a great deterrent to strangers looking for your contact information online. By making it easier for users to report personal data as it comes up, we hope that Google will prevent a large number of unwanted emails from flooding your spam folder and calls that blow up your phone.

Loser: Wearables

Our loser this week is not just one company, but every brand that makes wearables after the sector has had a big hit in sales in 2022.

According to data compiled by market research firm IDC, wearables saw their sales drop to 107.4 million units in the second quarter of 2022. While that might sound like a lot of wearables (and it is), it’s 6.9%. decrease on an annual basis.

The top five companies on the list remained the same at this time last year, with Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei and Image Marketing sweeping most of the market, four of these brands also saw sales declines in 2022.

These declines appear to be partly due to higher prices – and not surprisingly, people are less inclined to upgrade their wearables during the cost of living crisis. The decline contrasts with the massive growth the market has experienced over the past two years.

However, this downturn came at a critical time for brands like Apple launching three new smartwatches (including the most expensive wearable to date), and Google preparing to release its first Pixel Watch.

Jitesh Ubrani, director of research at IDC Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, said in a report.

“And while pricing for some of the new products remains the same as the previous generation, the strength of the US dollar makes it more difficult to buy in local currencies around the world.”

The good news is that IDC expects the wearable market to see growth again in 2023. However, as far as 2022 goes, it’s shaping up to be a tough year.
