Google announces Android apps in weird Amazon storefront

Lately – especially with Samsung, Google has been advertising more prominently about the Android ecosystem and what it can do. The most recent example is an Amazon store/brand page (in the US) called “Devices with Google”.

This differs from the Made by Google storefront (Pixel, Nest, Chromecast, etc.) in that it only highlights Android phones from different partners. The cover shows Google Duo with its foldable enhancements, YouTube, and a Google Maps Live view.

Work, play and connect right out of the box.

Get your favorite Google apps when you shop from your favorite phones.

Oddly enough, the word “Android” is never mentioned on this Amazon store page with the focus on Google apps and services running on top of the mobile operating system. The Android brand also does not appear in “Google | Samsung Ads”, but the ads have been promoted on Android social channels.

There are three support columns with Google indicating the “built-in” nature. To search, there is a quick search through the home bar with voice queries, mainly “Google AR” and not “Google Lens” and Assistant.

Built-in Google apps cover Chrome, Google Password Manager, Google Pay, and Gmail as part of the workspace. Finally, Google’s security relates to Play Protect, Kids Space (and possibly Family Link) and Google Account settings

Moving on from the Amazon storefront home tab, devices that work with Google highlight four OEMs and have a fairly interesting description of each:

OnePlus: The best of Google’s security meets ultra-fast processing power.

Matching security with performance is a bit general, while “processing power” is pretty much the same across the board with the major flags at this point.

  • Featured phones: OnePlus 9, 9 Pro, 10 Pro, Nord N20, N200.

Samsung: The best of Google’s personalization features meet stunning design.

Possible article you refer to while emphasizing clear hardware design.

  • Featured Phones: S21 FE, S22, S22+, S22 Ultra, Flip 3, Fold 3, A12, A13, A53

Motorola: The best of Google simplicity meets uninterrupted performance.

In reference to the mostly stock nature on Moto devices.

  • Featured Phones: Razr 5G, Moto G Stylus 5G, G Pure, G Power, G Play, One 5G Ace, Edge, Edge+

Pixel: Google’s useful Pixel phones.

“Useful” is definitely the brand Google uses to describe itself

9to5Google’s Take

We first came across a Google Store page as a “sponsored” banner at the top of a product listing after searching on Amazon. Google Mobile Services Shopping was the number one item on the carousel.

Google’s sense of the need to advertise in this way is somewhat interesting. She wants to appear in front of people who buy Android phones and make sure they choose phones with Play Services. This is not the biggest problem in the United States, but conditions can always change in the future and abroad.

Meanwhile, the lack of the “Android” name anywhere is unlikely to be a reflection of Google’s loss of commitment to basic mobile OS development, but it could represent a brand shift focused on first-party services that Google explicitly provides.
