A massive collection of leaked GTA 6 footage has appeared on the Internet, confirming many details about the long-awaited crime.
With a wealth of gameplay in action, the leaked footage offers us our first glimpse of GTA 6 in action – albeit in a completely unpolished state. Gunplay and other gameplay features are shown, while character details and settings are hinted at within the environment.
It’s all pretty much incomplete. Combined with debug info and technical metrics, it’s clear that the screenshots are from a build in progress of the game. But it is real. Rockstar has confirmed that the leaked footage is authentic and has requested that several videos and screenshots that were shared on social media be removed.
This brings us together exactly what has been confirmed.
Vice City is back
Confirming a leak from earlier this year, footage indicates that GTA 6 will take place in Vice City – the fictional version of Grand Theft Auto for Miami. The clips show many city-specific signs and buildings with the words “Vice City” and “VCPD” written on the side of police cars (presumably the start of the city police department).
But it seems that GTA 6 will take place in a modern version of the city. While Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was set in 2002 in the mid-1980s, the presence of smartphones and cars with a contemporary look suggests that GTA 6 will take the capital to the present day. Although it is not only the city that you will explore. Some rural areas also appear, as well as what looks like a swamp. Some familiar locations will also return, including the Malibu Club and Ocean View hotel.
A set of two letters
The footage indicates that GTA 6 will feature two heroines, as well as the first female main character in the series. This is in line with an earlier leak, which hinted at the game’s dual threads and suggested that Rockstar was treating the characters with more political sensitivity than it has in other games.
The footage shows a Latina woman named Lucia, according to patch information, and her partner Jason. They’ve been previously described as a Bonnie and Clyde type pair, and these picks definitely lean toward that. In a leaked video, the criminal duo is seen robbing a restaurant, detaining the cashier, and fleeing as the police arrive. Bonnie and Clyde are mentioned by name on one of the patch lists.
Gunplay looks similar to that of GTA 5, with some new games and features introduced. The player is seen carrying various weapons – including an assault rifle, sniper, shotgun, pistol and rocket launcher – along with makeshift weapons – such as a golf bat, baseball bat and vinegar. At one point, they tossed their active weapon onto their other hand and picked up a rifle from the ground to add to their inventory—both of which are new features.
Looks like you’ll have some new moves to play with as well. A leaked video showed the player leaning his entire torso out of a car window while aiming an assault rifle in a full 360-degree circle. Elsewhere, the player crouches and crouches in a cap and carries a non-playable character on his shoulder. This could allow for more stealthy and more stealth-focused battles.
A new radial weapon selection screen can also be spotted. It appears to show a health kit or medicine of some kind, indicating that players will be able to heal or improve themselves in the middle of combat.
Whole Lotta Easter Eggs
Even this leaked footage shows quite a few callbacks and Easter egg fans will recognize from the wider world of GTA. Expect many more in-game businesses to come back, with LTD Gasoline already making an appearance. LifeInvader – GTA’s social media platform and Facebook parody – also appears.
Five stars or bust
As expected, GTA 6 will feature the basic levels required for the series. The footage shows a five star system like that of GTA 5, confirming that GTA 6 will not go back to the six star system that the previous entries in the series had.
But the police got a promotion. If the cops see you entering a stolen vehicle, they will search for you, even after you make your first escape. It’s true in life – cars have number plates, after all – and suggests you’ll have to think more about evading the law.
Although the leaks didn’t fully showcase the GTA 6 character customization features, we at least got confirmation of their existence. Lucia, the main female character in the game, is shown wearing different costumes and hairstyles, emphasizing that you can customize your strands and hair. It will be interesting to see the depth of GTA 6’s character customization options after Saints Row bowed hard at the feature earlier this year with its beloved factory.
