Chromecast HD bootloader can be unlocked by default

After officially launching Chromecast with Google TV HD just hours ago, you may be happy to know that your under $30 streaming device has an unlockable factory direct bootloader.

The new hardware is just an update or upgrade of the basic Chromecast that was updated back in 2018 along with the launch of the Pixel 3 series. Instead of being a conduit for your smartphone, Chromecast with Google TV HD adds an excellent Android TV user interface and remote control. Very important for commuting. This software is a huge step forward and makes it a convenient option for those who want a fast and cheap way to get their home broadcast setup easy to navigate and manage.

according to AFTV NewsLooks like you can unlock the bootloader for your new Chromecast with Google TV HD right from the factory. When Developer options are enabled, the “OEM Unlock” option is usually not available on the 4K model. However, on Chromecast HD you can toggle this to unlock the bootloader instantly without any difficulties.

For most people, this is something you would never think of and something we wouldn’t recommend. However, if you want to tinker or even dump a custom ROM on your streaming device, it may increase your interest in the device. With the previous generation, an exploit was needed to achieve the same feat.

as such AFTV News He notes though that being able to unlock the Chromecast HD bootloader may actually be a bug and can be corrected with a future OTA update. With that in mind, you may want to choose one and enable OEM unlocking once you receive your device. We’ll have a full review of the new devices in the coming weeks as well.
