AMD has announced its next generation Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT graphics cards. The new main GPUs are the first to be built on the RDNA 3 architecture.
At Thursday’s launch event, the company confirmed the presence of the new Radeon RX 7000 Series GPUs, which will compete head-to-head with the new Nvidia RTX 4000 Series.
The new chips will provide a 54 percent jump in performance per watt compared to GPUs based on RDNA 3 chips. That sounds like a huge leap forward in terms of range.
The Radeon RX 7900 XTX CPU is the best, with AMD grabbing 24 GB of memory, compared to the 20 GB of the RX 7900 XT. Both launched on December 13 and cost $999 and $899, respectively. We will give you UK prices when we get them.
During the event, the company revealed that the RX 7900 XTX is 1.7 times faster than the current flagship RX 6950 XT, when gamers are enjoying the action in 4K. There are also efficiency gains, with the panel power being 350W. Those interested in power usage may prefer AMD’s option to the Nvidia RTX 4090, which was announced in September, and comes at 450 watts.
During the launch event, the company revealed that the RDNA 3 architecture is capable of delivering 61 teraflops of power, which is a massive increase over the 23 TFLOPs that RDNA 2 GPUs can collect.
This new architecture also brings significant changes to how the GPU works. The 7000 series now has a chip design similar to the Ryzen CPU lineup that the company also offers. Basically, the tasks were assigned to different cores. There is a 5nm part for the graphics, while the 6nm technology handles all things memory-based. AMD says it is the first company to use the technology inside a GPU.
The chips also bring improvements to ray tracing technology, which enables game developers to offer advanced lighting options such as realistic shading. There is a 50% performance upgrade over the previous generation and an additional 1.5 beams.
The physical design of the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT is similar, and keeping the 8-pin connector means you should be able to connect it to your existing device without any hassle or extra cables.
