Amazon unveils its smallest and lightest Kindle with USB-C charging

Amazon just introduced a new and improved Kindle base model, along with a new Kindle Kids, and there are some major upgrades in store.

Amazon has unveiled its latest generation Kindle e-reader, which features higher resolutions, more storage, a larger battery and USB-C charging. The retailer also introduced Kindle Kids, which comes with a kid-friendly cover, a one-year Amazon Kids+, and a two-year worry-free warranty.

The new Kindle will have a 6-inch glare-free display with a resolution of 300 pixels per inch, which is three times sharper than the previous generation. The longest battery life will now last up to six weeks, and the storage capacity is 16GB, twice the size of its predecessor.

Significantly, it will now ship with a widely supported USB-C connector, abandoning Micro USB that was present in previous devices in the series.

This e-reader also supports features like dark mode, adjustable front lighting, x-rays (which provide details about people or places mentioned in books), and a built-in dictionary to look up word definitions.

The Kindle is “the latest example of how we’re continuing to bring premium features to our affordable devices so more customers can enjoy them,” said Eric Sarnio, Vice President of Amazon Devices International.

The construction includes 90% recycled magnesium, the packaging is 100% recyclable and is made of wood fiber-based materials from responsibly managed forests or from recycled sources; Available in black, pink and dark emerald, the accessory covers are made of 99% wood fiber-based materials.

Kindle Kids

Besides revealing the Kindle, Amazon also showcased the new Kindle Kids. This one has the same hardware, but it also comes with a “kid-friendly cover,” a two-year worry-free warranty, and a one-year Kindle Kids+.

This subscription service offers unlimited access to over a thousand age-appropriate books to read, and hundreds of audiobooks available on Audible that you can listen to over your Bluetooth speakers or headphones.

The Amazon Parent Dashboard also allows parents or guardians to set reading and bedtime schedules, while tools like Vocabulary Builder and foreign language learning audiobooks are available to help children with their studies.

Sarneo adds: “Since we launched Kindle Kids three years ago, children have logged nearly 3 billion minutes of reading on Kindle devices. The new Kindle Kids provides a better reading experience to help children become lifelong readers.”

Kid-friendly cover designs include Space Whale, Unicorn Valley, and Ocean Explorer themes.
