There is a new product in HP’s Elite Dragonfly series of premium business devices. Joining the Elite Dragonfly G3 and Elite Dragonfly Chromebook and drawing inspiration from the original Elite Folio is now the HP Elite Dragonfly Folio G3. This latest device takes a lot of lessons learned from Folio products from the past and looks to make some noise as one of the best and most luxurious Windows 2-in-1s of 2022.
Except this isn’t a traditional 2-in-1 Windows at all. Just like the first HP Elite Folio or the Surface Laptop Studio, there are no 360-degree hinges on this device. Alternatively, you can pull the OLED screen down and pull it toward you to secure it to the keyboard surface. You can even fold the entire screen into the keyboard and use this device as a tablet. That’s while enjoying things like the premium faux leather coating, improved webcams, and a new pen storage mechanism. If all this catches your eye, we have your back. Here’s a look at everything you need to know about the HP Elite Dragonfly Folio G3.

HP said the HP Elite Dragonfly Folio G3 is now available for purchase. However, we visited the product page and found a “Notify Me” button instead. At the time of writing, HP doesn’t appear to have the HP Elite Dragonfly Folio G3 in stock yet, but that could change at any moment.
But this is not surprising, as the global pandemic has affected the supply chain as well as shipping. The chipset shortage, as well as display parts, is likely to have affected shipping schedules even though HP intends to make the product available upon announcement. We will do our best to update this guide if the product page changes.
HP has stated that the starting price on the HP Elite Dragonfly Folio G3 will be $2,379. It hasn’t specified which model it will include, and we don’t have a product page that has yet to be confirmed. This is supposed to be an Intel Core i5 model, with 8GB of RAM, plus 256GB of base storage, but we’re taking that as a guess. As the above table shows, you can raise the specs a bit to increase the price if you need to. You can push up to 32GB of RAM, as well as 2TB of storage, or opt for an Intel Core i7 processor.
What’s new in the HP Elite Dragonfly Folio G3?
The main design of the HP Elite Dragonfly Folio G3 hasn’t changed much between generations. As we mentioned at the top of this guide, you can still find a faux leather finish on the device, and you’ll still be able to pull the screen toward you and mount it to the keyboard deck or push it down again to make the Folio a tablet. HP calls these modes clamshell, media mode, or tablet mode.
However, there are a lot of smaller changes in the HP Elite Dragonfly Folio. These changes cover the CPU, webcam, and more, here’s what you need to know.
12th generation Intel processors
The latest HP Elite Folio came with an arm-based Qualcomm processor under the hood. This means that people have performance issues and other issues with the device, mainly due to the application compatibility issues that Windows on Arm encounters. Popular apps like Google Chrome, video editing apps or even games didn’t work properly on the original Folio or sometimes refused to play.
Despite this, the new HP Elite Dragonfly Folio G3 comes with options for 12th generation Intel Core i5 or Intel Core i7 processors. As we mentioned in most of our laptop reviews so far in 2022, these CPUs are a big deal. They come with a hybrid architecture, with both performance cores, as well as efficiency cores. These chips also come from Intel’s U-series family, which are designed for thin and light devices like this one. Basically, you get better performance for your money.
You won’t have compatibility issues with these CPUs, as most Windows laptops have the same build under the hood. Just note that since this is an Intel chip, you won’t get the best battery life when you compare the Folio with an ARM-based Qualcomm processor. It should still be decent, though, rated at 13 hours and 30 minutes on the model with an IPS panel and 7 hours on the model with an OLED panel.
The new HP Dragonfly Folio Pen leads to a better speaker and keyboard
The second big change between the HP Folio generations is the new HP Dragonfly Folio. This pen differs from the original in design, as well as the way it houses the HP Elite Dragonfly Folio G3 itself.
The new HP Elite Dragonfly Folio is more rounded and not as flat as the previous HP Folio. This would make it more comfortable to hold and use. It features three programmable buttons.
The switch on the stylus also means that the stylus is no longer located at the top of the keyboard deck. Now, you can magnetically connect and charge it by attaching it to the right side of the device. This freed up room for HP to include a speaker on the top of the keyboard deck, as well as enlarge the keyboard and trackpad a bit. You’ll also notice the lack of speakers on the keyboard side this year as a result.
Previously, the old HP Folio went the extra mile with IPS panel options. This has changed now that you can configure the HP Elite Dragonfly Folio G3 up to a 3K2K OLED display option. The standard HP Elite Dragonfly G3 also comes with OLED screens, so it’s great to see in this new product as well.
Switching to an OLED panel makes the HP Elite Dragonfly Folio G3 even more vibrant. Of course, it’s still an upgrade and won’t be standard, but it does help creative types enjoy more subtle colors. This also means that media consumption should be great, as things like movies will look more vibrant on screen.
We all spend more time in front of our webcam these days, and that’s the best that the HP Elite Dragonfly Folio G3 will be. 1080p FHD webcams are the standard on most new laptops in 2022, but HP is pushing things even further. You’ll find that the HP Elite Dragonfly Folio G3 has an 8MP wide-angle webcam. This webcam has a field of view of up to 100 degrees, which will help you fit a larger part of your body on web calls and reduce the size of your face. It’s also Windows Hello, so you can sign in to your device safely. That’s a huge step up from the 720p webcam over the original Folio in terms of image quality, too. You won’t seem divided on your calls anymore.
All this is backed by great software features like HP Auto Frame that focuses on you as you move, and noise canceling, which can mute background noise using the built-in microphones. Note that HP also includes a physical camera kill button on the keyboard as well, which turns off your webcam when you don’t need it.
